Importance Of Creative Commons License In Promoting Open Access

Creative Commons licenses are intended to allow authors to grant others permission to reproduce, distribute, and make various uses of their work — and, if relevant, to designate whether or not their work can be used in a commercial setting. It is also the goal of Creative Commons licenses to guarantee that writers receive credit for their work.

The Open Access approach served as a foundation for further research into various uses of Creative Commonslicenses and public domain techniques in data, biological materials, the semantic web, and patents. For their efforts in the Open Access movement, Creative Commons has not received any project-specific funding.

What Is Creative Commons

Creative Commons licences explained

Creative Commons is a licensing arrangement that allows creators to license their work so that otherscan use it without needing to ask them first. A Creative Commons license cannot be added to a work for which you do not own the copyright.
To solve the world's most pressing problems, Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation that strives to remove legal obstacles to information and creative sharing. Everybody may benefit from Creative Commons' free, transparent, and standardised approach to granting copyright licenses for creative and academic works, ensuring proper attribution, and allowing others to copy, distribute, and exploit those works. It is open to everyone. It works with influential organisations and governments to establish, adopt, and implement open licensing agreements and guarantee the correct use of Creative Commons licenses and materials. This organisation also supports the CC Global Network, a community initiative to broaden the reach and improve the quality of publicly available content throughout the world. The Open COVID Pledge is overseen by the organisation, which invites worldwide organisations to disclose their patents and copyrights to battle the COVID-19 epidemic. It develops tools such as CC Search to assist individuals in discovering and utilising freely licensed material. Everyone interested in creating and engaging with publicly licensed works may take advantage of the Creative Commons Certificate program, a complete course. The annual CC Summit supports open licensing and global access to creative works. It encourages the growth of GLAM and Open Education Global Communities.

Creative Commons Licenses

There are six main licenses.

Attribution (CC BY)

This license grants people the right to distribute, remix, modify, and build upon your work, including for commercial purposes, as long as they attribute your work as the author. This is the most flexible of the licenses that are available. It is recommended in order to maximize the distribution and usage of licensed products.

Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA)

It is permitted for people to remix, adapt, and build upon your work, even for commercial purposes, so long as they give you proper credit and license their new works under the same conditions as your original work. This license is sometimes likened to the "copyleft" free and open source software licenses that are popular today. All new works based on yours will be subject to the same license, which means that any derivatives will be permissible for commercial use. This is the license that Wikipedia uses, and it is suggested for materials that might benefit from combining content from Wikipedia and other similarly licensed projects into their content.

Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND)

It is permitted for others to reuse your work for any purpose, even for commercial purposes; but, it is not permitted to be shared with others in a modified form, and you must be given credit for any such usage.

Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC)

It is permissible for others to remix, adapt, and build upon your work in a noncommercial manner, and while their new works must also recognize you and be noncommercial in nature, they are not required to license their derivative works under the same conditions as your original work.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA)

Others can remix, modify, and build upon your work for non-commercial purposes as long as they acknowledge you and license their new creations under the same conditions.

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND)

Other people can download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you; however, they are not permitted to change them in any way or use them for commercial purposes. This license is the most restrictive of the six main licenses, allowing others only to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you.

Importantance For Open Access

Over the last several years, Creative Commons has been actively involved in the emerging Open Access movement, providing critical legal tools and analyses to enable individual academics, universities, and organisations interested in engaging in open access. As one of the first projects undertaken by the ScienceCommons initiative at Creative Commons, the Open Access effort offered an opportunity to investigate how CC licenses may be applied to the academic canon, and served as a platform for further investigation. A foundation was laid for future research into further uses of Creative Commons licenses and public domain technologies in data, biological materials, the semantic web, and patents based on the Open Access effort.

Conclusion

Open access publishing is highly dependent on Creative Commons licenses, and there are several benefits associated with utilising them. There are some difficulties as well. According to popular belief, a journal cannot be considered open access unless it use a Creative Commons License of some kind.
