According to the judgment, a registered gun owner faces the possibility of being prosecuted for illegally carrying a weapon if they are found in Brasilia during those four days with a firearm in their possession.
A few days after the arrest of a man on suspicion of planting and possessing explosive devices at Brasilia International Airport, the team working for Lula da Silva requested that firearms not be permitted during the inaugural ceremony.
George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, a 54-year-old gas station manager, has been identified as the suspect in this case. Sousa is a supporter of the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, and he reportedly told the police in a statement that was viewed by CNN that he intended to "create chaos" in order to prevent Lula da Silva from taking office again in January.
The prohibition on the possession of guns was scheduled to go into effect on Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time, which corresponds to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. It will remain in effect until the end of Sunday. According to what Moraes wrote, it will not apply to those who are currently serving in the armed services, including police officers and private security guards.
Despite the fact that Bolsonaro's administration has stated that it is cooperating with the handover of power, the far-right leader has refrained from openly recognizing that he was defeated in the election on October 30. In an act of defiance, thousands of his fans have converged on military bases all around the country. They are pleading with the military to intervene because they assert, without any evidence, that the election was rigged against their candidate.
According to the statement made by the police, Sousa traveled from his home state of Para to the capital city of Brasilia on October 12 in order to join other supporters of Bolsonaro who were camping out in front of the headquarters of the Armed Forces in the city.
According to the statement that Sousa released, he claimed that he was motivated to spend more than $30,000 to purchase the firearms and ammo by President Bolsonaro. An attempt has been made to contact Bolsonaro for a comment on the matter.
