The first official Barbie teaser trailerfor the highly anticipated film directed by Greta Gerwig was released by Warner Bros. on Friday. The 75-second trailer released by Warner Bros. on Friday introduces fans to Margot Robbie as the legendary doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
Helen Mirren's narration in the trailer (done in the style of the legendary 2001: A Space Odyssey) describes how Barbie altered the landscape of toys when children previously played mostly with baby dolls. Robbie, as Barbie, winks at the camera before brief glimpses of the colorful film are shown to the audience.
The teaser for the live-action film directed by Greta Gerwig begins with a parody of "2001: A Space Odyssey" in earth tones. Young kids play calmly with their dolls in a desert. A narrator states, "Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until …"
Then a gigantic Barbie appears wearing the original striped swimsuit introduced by Mattel in 1959 and the girls turn on their out-of-date dolls.
The advertisement then shifts to brief clips of Barbie's neon pink dream world before concluding with a dance sequence.
A blonde Ryan Gosling appears as Ken, the tanned, toned, and plastic boyfriend of Barbie.
The film is directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) from a screenplay she and her real-lifepartner, Noah Baumbach, wrote together. In brief glimpses, Ryan Gosling's character Ken can be seen wearing a leather vest with fringe alongside Kingsley Ben-Adir and Ncuti Gatwa. Issa Rae wears a pink ribbon that reads "President" while Simu Liu looks to be dancing in an all-black ensemble. Robbie told Vanity Fair for her recent cover story, "Making an obvious Barbie movie would’ve been extremely easy to do. . . and anything easy to do is probably not worth doing" She subsequently said, "People have got strong feelings. I’d much rather that than indifference. Now, let me subvert your expectations. It’s much scarier, but it’s also a great place to begin."
Gerwig spoke similarly about challenging the current quo when discussing the film with Dua Lipa (who also stars in the film) on her podcast At Your Service. "It felt like vertigo, starting to write it, like: ‘where do you even begin, and what would be the story?’" The Oscar nominee stated about writing Barbie. "And I think it was that feeling I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that’s where the best stuff is, where you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender’—then you’re like, ‘I should probably do it.’"
