In March of 2018, the authorities uncovered a $420 million gambling ring in which two high-ranking government officials and approximately 90 otherswere involved (including government officials).
In September of 2018, the ringleader of an illicit online sports bettingoperation that was worth about $26 million was given a nine-year prison sentence.
When another online gambling ring was shut down in 2017, it was worth an estimated $89 million.
The value of the underground gaming market is predicted to reach the multi-billion dollar figure.

Football Betting In Vietnam

Bets on football, horse racing, and greyhound racing were restricted by decree during the first three years of a five-year pilot program that legalized sports betting in Vietnam in 2017. This was similar to a three-year pilot program that legalized gambling in select casinos.
To avoid prosecution, Vietnamese gamblers must avoid major leagues like the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga and instead place their money on foreign events sanctioned by FIFA.
VietnamNet reports that the Ministry had issued a regulation legalizing 27 new football leagues and tournaments. It also allowed for wagering on Vietnam-related events including the U-20 World Cup and the World Cup qualifiers for the national football team.
