Drone fired at Russian airbase kills three servicemen, according to Russian state newsagencies and the defense ministry. The incident happened on Monday when a Ukrainian drone was shot down by air defenses as it approached a military airfield in the Saratov Oblast, which is deep inside Russian territory.
The event took place at Engels, a western port city located on the Volga River, approximately 500 miles (more than 800 kilometers) southeast of Moscow. This is the second time in this month that an attack of this kind has been attempted against the city, which is home to the Engels-2 military airfield, which is a strategic bomber airbase.
According to Roman Busargin, Governor of Saratov Oblast, on Monday, law enforcement officials are now examining the event that occurred at the airfield. The remarks, which were published on his official Telegram channel, were made as stories began to emerge regarding an explosion in the city.
In addition to this, he stated that there were "no emergencies in the residential sectors of the city" and that there was no damage to the civilian infrastructure. In addition, he communicated his condolences to the families of the fallen service members and assured them that the government will provide aid in some form.
CNN has not been able to independently verify the Russian reports that the drone was shot down on purpose and did not reach the target it was aiming for.
Yurii Ihnat, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian Air Force, made statements on Monday in which he did not directly claim credit for the drone attack but did hint that the attack was the "consequence of what Russia is doing."
If the Russians imagined that the conflict would not affect anyone in the farthest reaches of Russia or anywhere else, they were gravely incorrect. Therefore, as we can see, more and more of these kinds of things are occurring, and let's keep our fingers crossed that this will ultimately be to Ukraine's advantage- Yurii Ihnat, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian Air Force
Also on Monday, a spokesperson for the Security and Defense Forces of the South of Ukraine issued a warning about the possibility of a retaliatory strike from Russia. The spokesperson made reference to a similar incident that occurred earlier this month in the same region.
"This reminds of the events that took place on December 5, so there may be some deja vu, some repetition of this situation," the spokesperson said. "After that, [the Russians] launched a massive missile strike." "As a result, we need to make sure that we are prepared for this, that we take it into consideration when making our plans, and that we do not forget to get to the shelter."
Earlier in this month, footage obtained from a CCTV camera in Engels appeared to show an explosion that lit up the night sky. Residents were also reassured by Governor Busargin at the time that no damage was done to any civilian infrastructure, and they were told that "information about occurrences at military facilities is being checked by law enforcement agencies."

Conclusion

It was brought to his attention that reports of "a loud blast and a burst in Engels in the early hours" were making their way across social networks and the mainstream media.
The location where the CCTV film was recorded in the beginning of December is approximately 6 kilometers away from the Engels-2 airfield.
