Many gamers feel heartbroken when they receive the newsthat Google will halt Stadia's gaming servicestarting today. According to the Google company announcement, they informed us on September 29, last year, that the Stadia servers will be shut down on January 18, 2023. What is the reason for the shutdown? When it came out in November 2019, Stadia was called "Netflix for games." Players could stream games online without a PC or console.
The service will be unavailable in the UK starting at 08:00 on January 19. According to the BBC, a reliable news outlet, the gamers said that they were "heartbroken" to see Stadia disappear. Google, on the other hand, has offered to refund money to those who made a purchase using the gaming service.
The refund also covers all customers who purchased controllers, games, or downloaded material. According to Google, the reimbursements will be processed by the middle of January.
Google has released "Worm Game" as the last Stadia game as a way to say goodbye. It has also said that its Stadia controllers will be able to use Bluetooth. This will let them be used wirelessly on PCs to play any game, even after Stadia shuts down.
Stadia users and fans are sad, and many of them have pointed out that some games made just for Stadia could be lost forever once the service shuts down. Last year, the London-based company Splash Damage, which made the multiplayer game Outcasters, said it had no plans to bring the game anywhere else.
Dylan Cuthbert, the founder and CEO of Q-Games, told BBC News that his team spent two years making PixelJunk Raiders for Stadia and that he didn't want it to be "gone forever." He stated:
“„It's a real shame when people can't play a game you've spent years making. We're hoping to talk to publishers who can help us get it on to a PC or even PS5 [PlayStation 5] or other platforms. The IP is ours, so we're trying to find a way to do that.
Mr. Cuthbert said that he was talking about how this could work with Google, which had been thinking ahead about how to solve the problem. But there is a second issue. He said:
“„I'd want to rework the game a little bit as well. At the time when we launched it, we did have to rush it a bit at the end. I wanted to spend like a bit more time - maybe another eight months or so - reworking a few things. If I was going to relaunch it, I'd do that and I'd want to find a publisher who can help us do that. But there's nothing on the books yet.
Jordy, a 30-year-old gamer from Gosport, a town and non-metropolitan borough on the south coast of Hampshire in South East England, said she was "heartbroken" by the news that Stadia was shutting down because she bought three of its controllers. She added:
“„I honestly loved Stadia. One of the things I found the best about Stadia was the fact I could game anywhere. I was able to play games like Destiny 2 with my partner via my iPad whilst he was playing on the PS5. The Stadia controller was the best controller I'd used. I loved it.
On the other hand, Jordy thanked Google for not leaving Stadia's user out of pocket. She continued:
“„The refunds enabled me to get myself a new gaming device and Ubisoft even gave me the games we already purchased, for free. Even the hardware was refunded, so we essentially got controllers and 4K Chromecasts for free. It is a shame that Stadia had to close but I am happy I was able to experience it.
Written below is the updated announcement made by Stadia:
On September 29, 2022, Google announced that the Stadia servers will be turned off on January 18, 2023. The following article includes answers to common questions and will be updated as new information becomes available. Please check back for updates before contacting support.
Starting November 9, 2022, Stadia will attempt to automatically process refunds for all purchases of games, add-on content, and subscription fees other than Stadia Pro made through the Stadia Store. We ask for your patience as we work through each transaction and ask that you refrain from contacting Customer Support as they will not be able to expedite your refund during this time. We still expect the majority of refunds to be processed by January 18th, 2023.
Google pretty much gave up on Stadia as a cloud gaming service for consumers because it didn't have enough users. It never attracted enough individuals to use it to compete with games that have been around for a long time. Also, during its two-year run, Microsoft pushed Xbox Cloud Gaming more and more into the market, while other options like Nvidia GeForce Now catered more to PC gamers.
The general manager of Stadia, Phil Harrison, wrote on a Google blog that his platform didn't get enough attention. He said:
“„A few years ago, we... launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia's approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technologyfoundation, it hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.
Stadia, Google's cloud gaming platform, is currently accessible in 22 nations, including the US and the UK, which are both paid and free. The service will be discontinued beginning on January 19, 2022, according to a new announcement from the software giant.
