Scientists Find A New Energy Storage System Can Store Solar Energy For 18 Years

According to a news release, scientists at Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology have developed a new energy storage system can store solar energy for 18 years. The Chalmers team has shown that their Molecular Solar Thermal System (MOST) can create power on demand with the support of experts from China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University by hooking up the device to a thermoelectric generator. More than a decade of research and development has led the Chalmers team to the conclusion that their technique might one day be used to charge low-power electronic gadgets.Carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen molecules with unique structures were used to create the system.

Russian Troops Slam Generals Over 'Incomprehensible Battle' In Donetsk

Russian troops slam generals over 'incomprehensible battle' in Donetsk after apparently sustaining heavy losses during a week of intense fighting in the key eastern region of Ukraine. Moscow has been trying to break through Kyiv’s defenses around the town of Pavlivka for at least the past seven days, but it seems to have made little progress with as many as 300 men killed in action, according to an open letter published on a prominent Russian military blog on Monday.

Bacteria Are Destroyed By Strange Antibiotics Used As A Last Resort

Bacteria are destroyed by strange antibiotics used as a last resort. Antibiotics belonging to the polymyxin class cause bacterial cell membranes to crystallize, as shown in recent high-resolution microscopy photos. Researchers describe their findings in Nature Communications on October 21. The honeycomb-shaped crystals transform the normally pliable coverings of fat molecules on the microorganisms into thin, brittle sheets. When the bacteria's membranes become unpetrified, they perish.

Restoring And Normalizing Protein Cluster Prevent Dementia, Study Finds

Memory loss and impaired judgment are hallmarks of dementia. According to recent research, neurodegenerative illnesses may be avoided if hazardous protein clumps are removed. A recent study out of the University of Queensland suggests that restoring and normalizing protein cluster prevent dementia. This was found by scientists at the Queensland Brain Institute who were studying the role of the enzyme Fyn and the protein Tau in frontotemporal dementia.

Kyiv Residents Consider Leaving As Power Outages And Salaries Plummet

Kyiv residents consider leaving as power outages and salaries plummet. Residents of Kyiv have gotten used to being without power for 12 hours a day, but the situation is getting worse as the Russian missile campaign puts more pressure on the Ukrainian grid, causing even more power outages.

See Total Lunar Eclipse From Australia And New Zealand In November

As light reaches the Moon and passes through the dust in the Earth's atmosphere, it turns red. November brings us a spectacular celestial event: the Moon will turn reddish as the Earth passes between it and the Sun. See the Total Lunar Eclipse from Australia and New Zealand in November. Evening people across Australia and New Zealand will be treated to a total lunar eclipse, weather permitting. It’s an opportunity not to be missed, as the next one won’t be visible from the region until 2025.

Crowdsourced Data From Cell Phones Could Be Used To Ensure The Safety Of Bridges

Crowdsourced Data From Cell Phones Could Be Used To Ensure The Safety Of Bridges

Sensors similar to those found in common mobile phones might be used to keep an eye on bridges, keeping them from collapsing like the one in India just recently. Smartphones equipped with accelerometers and global positioning system (GPS) sensors might supply engineers with regular, real-time data on bridge vibrations and warn them of changes in integrity. So, crowdsourced data from cell phones could be used to ensure the safety of bridges.

COP27 Warns 'Climate Chaos' As UN Climate Change Summit Begins

COP27 warns 'climate chaos' as UN climate change summit begins in Egypt. A warning was given that our planet is "sending a distress signal." Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was responding to a UN report that said the last eight years are on track to be the warmest on record. The report came out on Sunday.

Astronomers Find A Black Hole Closest To Earth

Astronomers Find A Black Hole Closest To Earth

Astronomers find a black hole closest to earth about 1,600 light-years from Earth, making it the nearest such object yet found. On Friday, scientists announced that this black hole is 10 times bigger than our sun. That's a new record for proximity by a factor of three. The black hole was discovered by tracking the orbit of a companion star that travels at about the same speed as Earth does around the sun. According to Kareem El-Badry of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the European Space Agency's Gaia probe was responsible for the original discovery of the black hole.

Last Glaciers In Kilimanjaro And Africa To Disappear By 2050 Due To Climate Change, UN Study Says

Last glaciers in Kilimanjaro and Africa to disappear by 2050 if melting continues at its present pace, according to new United Nations research. Jointly commissioned by UNESCO and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the research was published on Thursday (IUCN). Researchers looked at glaciers in 50 places that UNESCO has designated as World Heritage Sites.

New Study Finally Solves A 70-Year-Old Puzzle Of How Dopamine Relates To Schizophrenia

New Study Finally Solves A 70-Year-Old Puzzle Of How Dopamine Relates To Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a terrible brain disorder that causes delusions, hallucinations, and other forms of psychosis. Researchers at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development (LIBD) think they have solved a mystery that has stumped scientists for more than 70 years: how dopamine relates to schizophrenia. By studying gene expression in the caudate nucleus, a region of the brain associated with emotional decision-making, scientists were able to both identify the genetic mechanism that regulates the flow of dopamine and provide physical evidence that neuronal cells lack the precision necessary to maintain stable dopamine levels.

Changing Colors And Identities, Chameleon Cancers Evade Conventional Therapies

Due to the blood cancer's ability to adapt and avoid treatment, it is very challenging to cure. Scientists have found a way that Chameleon cancers evade conventional therapies. Children receiving treatment for blood cancer were studied by scientists from the Princess Maxima Center in the Netherlands and the Universities of Birmingham and Newcastle in the United Kingdom.
