Nicole Kidman receives standing ovation after bidding $100,000 for hat signed by Hugh Jackman
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have known each other for a long time and have been in each other's lives for decades. However, it wasn't until recently that they became friends.
The "Big Little Lies" star went to see "The Music Man" at the Winter Garden Theatre on Saturday night to support her former co-star. There, she shocked everyone with a huge gift.
Off-camera, Kidman can be heard proposing $100,000 for a hat worn by Hugh Jackman's character in a video shot inside the theater and posted online. That charity would be Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
When she walks into the room, people cheer loudly and stand up to give her a standing ovation. She then walks to the stage and gives a stunned Hugh Jackman a hug.
“„
I love Broadway, I love what they do ― Broadway Cares, but I also want to say, the show is extraordinary.- Ncole Kidman
Nicole Kidman told the actor before he gave her the expensive hat. Then, as Kidman went back to her seat, Jackman took the mic to praise her on stage.
“„
I’ve known Nic for almost 30 years. I’ve worked with her, I can tell you this is not a surprise. She’s one of the most generous souls I know.- Hugh Jackman
Jackman said the same thing on Twitter, where he posted a video of the on-stage moment and wrote:
“„
The generosity emanating from #NicoleKidman leaves me speechless! You ARE amazing. Thank you for your friendship and support!- Hugh Jackman
The "X-Men" actor is currently starring in the hit Broadway revival with Sutton Foster. The show is set to end next month. Even though Kidman and Jackman have only worked together on-screen once, in Baz Luhrmann's 2008 flop "Australia," they have been friends behind the scenes for decades.
The Oscar winner has said in the past that Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness helped her get started in Hollywood. When she first moved to Los Angeles, she would often sleep on the couch of Deborra-Lee Furness.
“„
She was one of my best friends. [I slept on the couch] in the house that Deborra-Lee was renting, and she gave me the chance to stay there and we could go and audition. Both of them were so influential in helping me get started in the States.- Nicole Kidman
She also said in 2019 that the longtime couple helped her get better after her divorce from Tom Cruise in 2001, saying that they were "so much a part of my healing."
Now, Jackman should give the same amount to a charity of his choice the next time he sees one of Kidman's AMC ads.
Kidman's bid started the last week of Red Bucket Fall fundraising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a nonprofit that raises money for AIDS-related causes all over the country.

In an Instagram post with a video of the special moment, the group wrote about it. The organization says that Kidman's donation will pay for 20,000 meals and 2,000 doctor visits for people with HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, or other life-threatening illnesses during the holiday season.
