Another series of attacks like these have been going on since the 10th of October, with Russian missiles hitting energy stations again on Wednesday. According to the operator of the grid, Ukrenergo, there will be blackouts over the entire country on Thursday, each lasting up to four hours.
This newscomes as Russia has declared martial law in the parts of Ukraine that it has occupied. In addition, Russia's border regions with Ukraine are now subject to a heightened level of security, particularly in the border cities.
Ukrenergo has urged citizens of Ukraine to stock up on water and make sure they have "warm socks and blankets and hugs for family and friends" in preparation for the power outages that are expected to occur.
It strongly recommended charging all electronic devices, including phones, power banks, flashlights, and batteries.
Oleksandr Kharchenko, an assistant to the minister of energy in Ukraine, estimates that as much as forty percent of the country's energy infrastructure has sustained significant damage.
On Wednesday, three energy facilities were damaged, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, and energy businesses are currently preparing for "all potential situations" for the upcoming winter season. It was planned that he would deliver a speech during a summit of EU leaders who are attempting to negotiate a reduction in the cost of gas.
Kryvyi Rih, located in the middle of Ukraine, and Burshtyn, located in the west, both reported suffering severe damage to their power infrastructure. According to Ukrenergo, the number of attacks that have taken place in the previous ten days has exceeded the total number of strikes that have taken place since Russia's invasion on February 24.
Ukrenergo warned that power outages could occur over the entirety of Ukraine between the hours of 7:00 and 22:00 local time and stated that it will implement "managed, calculated usage restrictions." It recommended that citizens examine the websites of the regional network operators to determine how the change would affect them specifically.
Several areas of Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, as well as several of the country's provinces, have already experienced sporadic power outages. Infrastructure has been damaged all across Ukraine as a result of Russian missile attacks, especially in places such as Lviv, which are located in the west and are a significant distance from the conflict.
